<p>A pulse crop researcher from the University of Saskatchewan has won a prestigious national research position to conduct studies on lentil genetics that could lead to more resilient and nutritious varieties.</p>
<p>More than 30 per cent of the global lentil supply originates from lentil varieties developed by U of S plant scientist Bert Vandenberg. Today, Vandenberg was awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Industrial Research Chair.</p>

<p>Twenty-seven students from the College of Dentistry were recognized at a White Coat Ceremony on Friday, Jan. 8. The ceremony marks their transition from the simulation lab to patient care and clinical treatment.</p>
<p>Dean Gerry Uswak of the College of Dentistry pointed out in his message that the ceremony &ldquo;represents their acceptance of the responsibility to uphold and guarantee the sanctity of the dentist-patient relationship, which is central to the dental profession for dentists and dental students alike.&rdquo; The white lab coats were a donation to the students from the College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan.</p>

The presentation was made to nearly 200 Adult Basic Education students.</p>
<p>SIAST education counsellor Lani Scragg said, &ldquo;Three years ago we began weekly student success workshops to connect students with community role models and services in the city. Topics include budgeting, housing, nutrition, family violence, drugs and alcohol and much more.&rdquo; She added, &ldquo;When students see a face from their community in the school they make a real connection, and we find they are more likely to reach out to a service.&rdquo;</p>

<p>The new school, which will be in a joint complex with the City of Humboldt's Uniplex and Carlton Trail Regional College, also needs construction tender approval from Humboldt city council and the college's board, as well as the provincial Ministry of Education, before work can begin on the site.</p>

According to Dr. Fay Myers, Parkland College President &ldquo;The proposed facility will enable Parkland College to meet future training demands of individuals, communities, and industry and facilitate the development of a skilled workforce in rural Saskatchewan.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;In order to deliver the training required by new and existing industries, Parkland College requires the development of a new campus designed specifically to expand delivery of advanced skills training in the areas of trades and technology,&rdquo; explained Myers. The Trades and Technology Centre will represent an expansion of Parkland College&rsquo;s role in economic and community development in rural Saskatchewan.</p>

To become a sponsor, each employer contributes $6,000 per student to pay for the intern's airfare, meals and accommodation while in Canada and in turn acquires a skillful candidate for a specified work term.</p>

The torch relay presentation will take place from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Regina Sportplex, 1717 Elphinstone St.</p>

<p>The U of R has accepted an invitation to become a member of the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA), a consortium of more than 60 universities in the U.S. As well as its research projects, SURA jointly operates the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Virginia with the U.S. Department of Energy.&nbsp;</p>
