The U of S College of Graduate Studies and Research (CGSR) has agreed to six memorandums of understanding (MOUs) that will provide graduate study opportunities for 20 PhD students.

The University of Regina's Paul J. Hill School of Business accounting team finished second in the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC) - Canada's premier undergraduate business case competition at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.

Members of the U of R team are fourth-year student Jon Josephson and third-year student Josh Litschko.

The popular Coffee House Controversies lecture series, presented by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Regina, resumes for another semester with Jeffery Webber, assistant professor of political science, delivering a talk entitled "The New Latin America Left."

After the debt crisis of the 1980s and the parallel right-wing neoliberal assault across Latin America, roughly the last decade witnessed resurgence in leftist movements and governments in the region, says Webber. As imperial wars advanced in other areas of the world, Latin America served as a beacon of hope, a site of resistance.

SIAST Woodland Campus hosted Saskatoon Northwest MLA Serge LeClerc, who presented his life story - one of transformation from one of Canada’s most-feared criminals to a respected politician and author. The presentation was made to nearly 200 Adult Basic Education students.

SIAST education counsellor Lani Scragg said, “Three years ago we began weekly student success workshops to connect students with community role models and services in the city. Topics include budgeting, housing, nutrition, family violence, drugs and alcohol and much more.” She added, “When students see a face from their community in the school they make a real connection, and we find they are more likely to reach out to a service.”

The Greater Saskatoon Catholic school board and Horizon school board have both agreed to award a $20.4-million tender for the construction of a new Humboldt collegiate.

The new school, which will be in a joint complex with the City of Humboldt's Uniplex and Carlton Trail Regional College, also needs construction tender approval from Humboldt city council and the college's board, as well as the provincial Ministry of Education, before work can begin on the site.

Plans to expand the delivery of advanced skills training are now in the works after the Parkland College Board of Governors set the direction by approving the business plan for a proposed new Trades and Technology Centre in Yorkton. According to Dr. Fay Myers, Parkland College President “The proposed facility will enable Parkland College to meet future training demands of individuals, communities, and industry and facilitate the development of a skilled workforce in rural Saskatchewan.”

“In order to deliver the training required by new and existing industries, Parkland College requires the development of a new campus designed specifically to expand delivery of advanced skills training in the areas of trades and technology,” explained Myers. The Trades and Technology Centre will represent an expansion of Parkland College’s role in economic and community development in rural Saskatchewan.

Coca-Cola today announced that FNUniv faculty member, Lionel Peyachew, has been selected for their Aboriginal Art Bottle Program. The Coca-Cola Aboriginal Art Bottle Program provides Aboriginal people across Canada the opportunity to experience the Olympic Spirit, while showcasing their art and culture to the world.

New training programs were introduced when the Cumberland College Board of Directors recently approved their program plans for the 2010-11 academic year. Area residents inter- ested in university, technical training and Adult Basic Education have access to a number of opportunities available in the upcoming year.

A wide range of first and upper year courses are available from the University of Saskatche- wan, University of Regina and First Nations University of Canada. Students can work to- wards degrees in many disciplines including Arts and Science, Agriculture, Social Work, Ele- mentary Education and many pre-professional colleges such as Medicine, Law, Pharmacy and Nutrition, and Physical Therapy. The University of Regina's Canada-Ukraine Science Internship Program (CUSIP) will continue for another five years with funding support of $60,000 from SaskPower, a long-time program sponsor and supporter.

Along with SaskPower, the University of Regina, Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC), Prairie Adaptation Research Collaborative (PARC) and MERA Consulting will host internships and provide financial support for CUSIP in 2010. To become a sponsor, each employer contributes $6,000 per student to pay for the intern's airfare, meals and accommodation while in Canada and in turn acquires a skillful candidate for a specified work term.

As part of the cross country Olympic torch relay, the University of Regina's Chamber Singers have been selected to perform "There's a Light", the official anthem of the 2010 Winter Olympics Torch Relay Ceremony on January 9, when the Olympic torch passes through Regina.  The University of Regina has become the first university outside the United States to become part of an elite group of universities that conducts research into nuclear physics and technology commercialization.

The U of R has accepted an invitation to become a member of the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA), a consortium of more than 60 universities in the U.S. As well as its research projects, SURA jointly operates the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Virginia with the U.S. Department of Energy.

The University of Saskatchewan Board of Governors has approved the master plan for College Quarter, a mixed-use development that will eventually include student residences and academic facilities in a vibrant neighbourhood setting.

Encompassing about 145 acres south of the main campus, College Quarter could potentially accommodate up to 3,000 new student residence beds situated among sports facilities, shops, restaurants, cafés, bookstores, grocery stores, offices, clinics, cultural destinations and green spaces. With the initial plan approved, the university will now embark on extensive community-wide consultation, with the City of Saskatoon engaged to help establish appropriate zoning for the mixed-use village.

The names of companies on the prairie agricultural scene once contained words like wheat pool and co-op. Today, those names are more likely to end in “Inc.”

What has happened to the agricultural co-ops that once served farmers in Canada and the United States? A new book, Cooperative Conversions, Failures and Restructurings, published by the University of Saskatchewan-based Knowledge Impact in Society (KIS) project, provides research findings that may have an impact on how today’s co-operatives make decisions.

North West Regional College celebrated its annual closing ceremony for the Hairstylist program. The Chapel Gallery was full of family and friends making for a memorable event. Melanie Roberts, Director of Programs, welcomed students and their guests. Congratulations and best wishes were provided on behalf of  SIAST from Gary Whitley. Bryan Nylander, President and CEO of NWRC, thanked SIAST for their role in helping the college to provide a quality hairstylist program in North Battleford. He congratulated the students for the skills they demonstrated in the salon and wished them the best in their profession, noting that the term hairstylist does not cover all the roles they play in their work life. He also thanked Wendy for her excellence in instruction, and families of the students for the support provided over the past year.

University of Saskatchewan (U of S) researchers have been awarded a total of more than $1.46 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) in support of 16 wide-ranging projects that could advance treatment for diseases such as diabetes and asthma, boost food production and industry competitiveness, and improve processes for water treatment and nuclear waste disposal.

“These outstanding U of S researchers have successfully met the CFI’s world-class standards for innovative research that will benefit our health, the economy, and our environment,” said U of S Acting Vice-President of Research Karen Chad.

The University of Regina has been granted almost $500,000 by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) for four research projects. These projects cover a variety of areas, including the environment, health and education.

Vice-President Research, Dr. David Gauthier, says these funding commitments from the CFI recognize the high quality of research being carried out at the U of R. "We are very pleased with the opportunities this funding creates for the University and our research partners," says Gauthier.
